It’s much more intuitive than the traditional ways of teaching math. That said, we do like Common Core math a lot.So it’s okay to teach a method that isn’t common core. Most teachers do not care what method students learn, as long as they can show their work.Even with our older students, many of them need support learning these foundational math skills. Do not worry! Most of our students are in 3rd grade and learning basic addition, subtraction and the times tables.+ What if I’m not comfortable with math or Common Core? Attend an hour long, live session (online) with one of our coaches.Complete our training workbook (takes 1-2 hours).Note: you will be asked to sign up for a 15-minute online meeting with a Step Up staff member.Fill out the application (.and get accepted).+ What will I have to do before starting? Step Up Tutoring uses Zoom to conduct tutoring sessions, so as long as your computer's camera and microphone work and you can use Zoom, you are ready to tutor! All you need to be a tutor/mentor is a personal computer, laptop, or tablet.+ Do I need any special equipment to tutor students with Step Up Tutoring? Yes! As long as you are 16 years or older you can be a volunteer tutor with Step Up Tutoring.+ Can I be a tutor/mentor as a high school student? If you are a student with need-based financial aid or have special circumstances, you may be eligible for reimbursement. Tutors are asked to pay for their own background check, which costs $25-30. Per LAUSD request, all tutors will be required to complete a background check.Strong communication and interpersonal skills.Proficient on Zoom, Google Suite, and general computer navigation.Bachelors or Associates Degree (or in progress).Yes! You only need to commit to 2 hours a week to be a tutor/mentor with Step Up Tutoring.Monitor students’ academic progress and engagement.Provide feedback to Step Up Tutoring, parents, and teachers.Manage scheduling with the student's family.
